Vent-Axia has launched the next generation of its popular Sentinel Totus Demand Energy Recovery Ventilation (D-ERV) system. Part of the company’s innovative Lo Carbon™ initiative, the new improved Sentinel Totus² integrates the proven Demand Ventilation control concept with high efficiency EC/DC motor technology and a state-of-the-art counterflow heat recovery cell to achieve up to 94% energy recovery.
Additional new benefits to the Sentinel Totus² include reduced sound levels which are achieved through the use of high density acoustic insulation and improved air paths within the unit, thus reducing turbulence and so system noise. These improvements also have the added benefit of reducing the SFP to below 1.8w/l/s.
Another new feature developed for the Sentinel Totus² is a full 100% summer bypass. Generally bypass damper units open and close just on the bypass itself effectively only giving a 70% bypass facility. However, as buildings become increasingly air tight the problem with buildings overheating is growing. Therefore with the Sentinel Totus² when temperatures rise the automatic summer bypass now closes off the airflow from the heat exchanger while simultaneously opening a bypass which the air flows through. This feature allows the building to take advantage of any free cooling available when ambient temperature is below the room design condition.
With customer comfort a key issue the Sentinel Totus frost heater control has also been modified so that it can provide top-up heating as well as its existing frost protection function. These modifications effectively eliminate cold draughts and provide good thermal comfort for occupiers without the need to fit expensive duct mounted heaters.
Designed to operate on the principles of demand ventilation the Sentinel Totus² responds to the precise ventilation requirements of a room at any one time providing the right level of supply and extract airflow only when required, making it ideal for schools, hotels, theatres, offices and other environments with changing occupancy patterns. Sentinel Totus² also recovers maximum energy (heat and cool) from the extracted air, transferring it into the fresh air supply via the unit’s integral high efficiency counterflow heat exchanger. The result is a ventilation system which significantly reduces fuel consumption and energy costs.
The Sentinel Totus’ demand operation can be triggered by its response to room occupancy according to a range of different sensor readings. These can include Timeclock or PIR occupancy detection to activate the unit, with additional proportional airflow control from a combination of sensors; CO2, humidity or temperature. These sensors communicate with the main Sentinel Totus² unit which, in turn, drives the fan to the necessary speed to deliver the required airflow. Sensors can be combined to generate a hierarchy of control for the ventilation system and operation can also be easily linked in to a Building Management System via volt free contacts for monitoring, if required.
Independently rated and tested to EN308, the Sentinel Totus² also incorporates energy efficient EC/DC motor technology, which is proven to use over 30% less energy than conventional AC motors. Automatic air-conditioning and heating interlocks enable Sentinel Totus² to optimise energy recovery performance further and provide free cooling during summer through bypass optimisation. Meanwhile, a user enabled night-time purge facility can reduce the start-up loads for a building’s air-conditioning plant and helps reduce over heat in summer from non-air conditioned spaces.
