The North Middlesex University Hospital in London is undergoing a major renovation programme to improve its facilities for patients and create a better environment for staff. As part of the £120 million development, Vent-Axia has provided a complete, reliable and effective hospital ventilation solution for the project.

The general hospital is the fourth busiest accident and emergency department in London taking 150,000 referrals a year, delivering 3000 babies and providing a world class service for sickle cell and Thalassaemia patients. In support of the North Middlesex University Hospital Trust’s strategy to provide an emergency driven acute hospital for the local population of Enfield, Haringey, Barnet, Waltham Forest and surrounding areas, the development will see approximately half of the existing buildings on the hospital site replaced. The new development will comprise state-of-the-art facilities for accident and emergency services, diagnostics, inpatients, operating theatres and endoscopy. Once completed, the hospital will house 600 inpatient beds.

Installed by contractor Bouygues, the project’s comprehensive ventilation solution features nine Acoustic in-line (ACQ) fans to serve kitchen areas at the hospital and a combination of Acoustic Twin (ATQ) fans and ACM In-Line Mixed Flow fans for bathroom and WC installation. Vent-Axia’s ACQ and ATQ fans both feature a 50mm acoustic lined sound controlled housing rated Class 'O' for use where quiet operation is required and are designed to be as compact as possible for concealed false ceiling applications. Meanwhile, the company’s ACM range is also dimensionally compact and features low noise and non-overloading characteristics.

In addition, for the hospital’s Atrium, Vent-Axia has developed a special Run and Standby Smoke related long cased axial fan (300 degrees for 1 hour) with two 75kw motors, which will supply and extract air at 44m3/s @ 200Pa. Incorporating pre-adjusted impellers, this comprehensive fan offers high performance and pressure characteristics. The castings are constructed from rolled steel plate complete with flanges and protected with a tough galvanised finish. Elsewhere on the project, Vent-Axia has supplied centrifugal extract fans to provide extraction levels that comply with Part F of the Building Regulations for extraction levels in kitchens and utility rooms, this includes the Tuberculosis examination room which has been fitted with the company’s EF 28 centrifugal blower.
